Adventure Wagon

Adventure Wagon wanted to engage outdoor enthusiasts in the fantasy of owning one of their custom built adventure vans. We built them a custom van configurator tool to give their customers the experience of building out their dream van, lessening perceived cost and expertise barriers.

My Role

I became intimately involved with this project as both a project manager and strategist. This project posed some unique strategy challenges in that the configurator was incredibly robust. We also collaborated with 3D rendering artist Sam Costa to create digital models of the van configuration as it was being built.

Pre-Configured Packages

The main goal of the new website was to engage folks in the fantasy of owning a van. They could easily explore the different pre-configured packages along with inspiration photos. They could even custom configure their own van right there on the site.

 

Adventure Wagon found themselves in a unique position in that they were the only adventure van outfitter offering a custom configurator on their website. All other competitors we explored required getting in contact to begin the process, which is enough of a barrier for many potential customers. By offering a configurator, folks could become invested in their dream van by the time they made it to the checkout page.

Process Deep Dive: Van Configurator

  • Audience Exploration

    We learned that the Adventure Wagon audience is fairly varied, though their common thread is desire to get outdoors and experience adventure. They are usually first- time van owners and range from young families to empty nesters.

  • User Flow

    Users have a huge array of customization options to choose from inside the configurator. We had the unique challenge of keeping the configurator engaging enough to get them to the checkout, while providing adequate opportunities for education.

    Customers must select a van to begin configuring. They can then select a pre-built package to customize or start from scratch. The whole process is very linear but also needs to give the flexibility to go forward and back, and also navigate away to learn more about products.

  • 3D Visualization

    We worked with digital artist Samuel Costa who created 3D renderings of all available van configurations and components. The components would come together in a full van mockup that would update live as customizations were made.

After launch, we continued to expand upon the site, creating an additional microsite for their new Gear Shop. The two sites were differentiated by a changing colorway site-wide. Customers could navigate between the Van Configurator and Gear Shop through the utility nav, with one login and cart shared by both sites.
